Apple said the global App Store ecosystem generated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, citing a new study from economists at Analysis Group. The company also said apps with consumer-facing AI features grew billings four times faster than other top apps on the storefront.

The figures underscore the scale of the App Store as both a marketplace and a distribution channel for developers. Apple said more than 90 percent of the billings and sales linked to the ecosystem did not carry a commission to the company. It added that the ecosystem has nearly tripled since 2019.

Physical goods drive most spending

According to Apple, the largest share of activity in 2025 came from physical goods and services, which accounted for $1.1 trillion. That segment was supported by continued growth in grocery shopping, food delivery and pickup, general retail, and travel.

Digital goods and services accounted for $149 billion, driven by games, enterprise software, and video streaming apps. Apple also said in-app advertising produced $151 billion in revenue from ads placed by developers inside their apps.

The company said the App Store reached more than 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions. Apple framed that audience as a major source of discovery for developers looking to reach customers globally.

AI features are spreading through apps

Apple highlighted artificial intelligence as one of the main forces shaping app growth. More than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store in 2025 included consumer-facing AI capabilities, according to the company. Those apps recorded stronger billing growth than other leading apps.

The company pointed to examples including health and fitness apps that use on-device intelligence to offer personalized recommendations, creative tools for photo and video editing, and productivity apps that rely on cloud-based models to handle more complex tasks. Apple said its own technologies, including the Foundation Models framework and Apple Intelligence, give developers ways to build AI features that work offline, protect privacy and use inference at no cost.

Apple also argued that AI is helping more people build apps in the first place. It cited AI-powered coding features in Xcode and said the latest version, Xcode 26, can take a more autonomous role in supporting developers as they iterate on ideas and streamline their work.

Regional growth remains uneven but broad

The company said the App Store ecosystem has expanded across major markets over the last six years. Billings and sales more than doubled in China during that period and more than tripled in the United States and Europe.

Apple said physical goods and services made up the largest category in every region it studied, with general retail ranking first everywhere. Other spending patterns varied by market. Travel was the second-largest physical-goods category in the U.S., Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In Korea, food delivery and pickup ranked second. In China, grocery and food delivery took the second and third spots.

Apple said those differences show how the App Store supports both global companies and local businesses. The company has continued to emphasize developer tools, testing services, analytics, and storefront features as part of that broader ecosystem.

The announcement comes ahead of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference next week, where the company plans to preview new features, application programming interfaces, and other technologies for developers across its platforms.
