Anthropic has dispatched senior technical staff to Washington to try to resolve U.S. export restrictions that forced the company to take its newest AI models offline only days after launch.
The move comes after a Friday order barred foreign access to Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 systems, prompting the company to disable the models for users outside the United States. According to reporting cited by the company, Anthropic and White House officials have been discussing the issue since the order was issued.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the weekend talks included Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and White House cyber official Sean Cairncross. Anthropic co-founder and chief compute officer Tom Brown reportedly joined the discussions, along with policy chief Sarah Heck. A source close to the company also told Axios that Anthropic technical staff have already held virtual meetings with White House officials.
Both sides are said to want the models back online, although the path to that outcome remains unclear. One possibility under discussion is a compromise that would pair Anthropic engineers with government security researchers. That approach could allow officials to review the models while giving the company a route to restore access more broadly.
The dispute highlights the growing tension between advanced AI deployment and government oversight. Anthropic's newest models were suspended almost immediately after launch, underscoring how quickly regulatory or security concerns can interrupt a product rollout in the fast-moving AI sector.
The issue may also carry consequences beyond the current policy fight. Anthropic has reportedly filed a confidential S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a step that gives the company flexibility to pursue an initial public offering. How the company handles the Washington dispute could influence how investors view its readiness for a public listing, especially if the standoff drags on.
For now, Anthropic has not said publicly what specific changes would satisfy U.S. officials or when the models might return to service. The White House also has not provided a public account of the talks.
The company has not commented in detail on the negotiations, and BeInCrypto said it contacted both Anthropic and the White House for comment.
The situation remains fluid, but the central question is whether Anthropic can persuade officials to relax the restrictions enough to allow Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to be accessed again outside the U.S. If not, the company may face a prolonged setback just as it tries to expand its position in the competitive AI market.
