Amazon MGM Studios has walked away from Luca Guadagnino’s nearly completed Sam Altman biopic, Artificial, according to multiple reports confirmed by Variety. The film, which stars Andrew Garfield as the OpenAI chief executive, is now being offered to other studios.

The decision comes months after Amazon announced a major partnership with OpenAI. In February, the company said it would invest $50 billion as part of an agreement to expand OpenAI’s use of Amazon Web Services and develop custom AI models. The timing has drawn attention because Artificial centers on one of the most visible figures in the AI industry.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company still respects Guadagnino and wants to keep working with him. The spokesperson added that Amazon believes the movie would be better released through a different studio and is helping the filmmaking team find a new home for it.

Guadagnino, whose previous films include Call Me by Your Name and Challengers, had been close to finishing the project. A representative for the director did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The film has a high-profile ensemble. In addition to Garfield, the cast includes Monica Barbaro as former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, Yura Borisov as former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Angus Imrie, Chris O’Dowd and Mark Rylance also appear in the film.

Written by former Saturday Night Live cast member Simon Rich, Artificial focuses on the short period in 2023 when Altman was removed from his post at OpenAI and later returned. The story appears to be a dramatic take on a pivotal moment in the company’s recent history.

According to the report, the movie had already gone through several test screenings before Amazon decided to step away, and those early reactions were said to be positive. The film was also shown to other studios on Thursday as part of the effort to secure a new distributor.

One person familiar with the film said Altman and Musk are portrayed as the least sympathetic figures in the story. The same source said audiences would likely respond to those characters the least. The outlet also reported that Amazon had reviewed earlier versions of the script before Guadagnino joined the project.

The development adds an unusual twist to a project already rooted in one of the most closely watched corners of the tech world. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Altman are known to have a relationship, and Altman attended Bezos’ wedding in Italy last year.

Puck first reported that Amazon had dropped the film.

For now, Artificial remains in search of a release plan, even as interest in AI-themed projects continues to grow across Hollywood.
